2009 Faculty Development Summer Institute

"Medical Education Coming to Your Shores: Getting on Board"

From Wed. May 27th – Fri. May 29th, the Division of Medical Education provided the first off-site Faculty Development Summer Institute, to 23 enthusiastic faculty in Saint John, NB. The program centered on providing knowledge and skills related to delivery of the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) curriculum, and specifically focusing on Med year 1.

The first day began with introductions of the facilitators and participants in a friendly face-to-face gathering, as well as a videoconferenced welcome from Dr. Cook, Dean, Faculty of Medicine. Additional in-person and videoconference presentations then provided a broad “30,000 ft introduction” to the medical curriculum, committee structures, and program delivery. An evening social event, a wine tasting demonstration at Happinez Wine Bar, was a great hit.

The curriculum on Thursday then immersed the participants into the details of Case-Oriented, Problem-Stimulated (COPS) curriculum used at Dalhousie, presented by Bruce Holmes, Patty Weld Viscount, and Wendy Stewart. The remainder of the day was spent on further exploring the UME curriculum with Dr. Dianne Delva, Associate Dean UME, and a session on student evaluation with Dr. Karen Mann.

Following a tour of the Saint John Campus building at UNB, an evening social dinner included lively performance on the accordion and cello by Wendy Stewart and Keith Wilson; a performance that may represent the beginning of the Humanities program in New Brunswick.

Numerous smaller sessions were presented on the final day of the Summer Institute, including; Distributed Education by Dr. Tim Fedak, Teaching while Managing a Clinical Practice by Drs. Wade Watson and Kathleen Horrey, Bioethics and Professionalism presented by Drs. Lynette Reid and Mahesh Raju, Communication Skills with Dr. Joan Evans, and a final brainstorming session facilitated by Dr. Dianne Delva and Patty Weld Viscount.

The general feeling that was present throughout the three-day event was one filled with great excitement and collaboration. The Division of Medical Education would like to express gratitude to Drs. Wade Watson and Kathleen Horrey for their help as facilitators, Pamela Bourque, Program Manager DMEP-NB, for her always helpful advice and assistance, and Linda MacNutt and Tanya Matheson for superb administrative support.
