The Faculty Development Program initiates, conducts and coordinates activities to assist faculty members in preparing themselves for a variety of educational roles in the Faculty of Medicine.
Faculty Development is well placed in the Division of Medical Education at Dalhousie. The members of the Division are recognized locally, nationally and internationally for their expertisein medical education. Thanks to Dr. Blye Frank and Dr. Dianne Delva for the strong foundation of Faculty Development that they have built in the School of Medicine.
The Faculty Development Program is committed to aiding faculty in attaining the knowledge and skills relevant to their roles as educators, researchers, administrators and scholars. In response to ongoing changes in health care delivery and the distribution of our programs we aim to assist all faculty associated with Dalhousie Medical School to reach their full potential. Key areas of focus include social accountability, cultural diversity, interprofessional education, problem-based and distributed learning, international medical education and development. Please explore our site and learn more about our specific programs, events and services. Discover information on the COPS curriculum, the Faculty Development Summer Institute, the Paul Cudmore Lecture series, the journal club and scholarly research activities. Resources will continue to be developed and mounted on the site for easy accessibility.
Residents, our faculty of the future, have significant roles in teaching during their training. The month-long elective in medical education for residents, a first in Canada, will be offered again in February. This is the fourth year of the program and we continue to attract excellent residents who wish to commit to medical education.
In addition, we extend leadership in faculty development to the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and to international delegations. The Division of Medical Education has worked with Dalhousie’s International Health Office and medical school teams in Pakistan and Turkey to develop and implement initiatives. We are hosting the International Medical Educators program this spring. This initiative of five medical schools in Europe and Canada aims to provide an international orientation on medical education for senior faculty from member schools.
As we strive to serve you, we welcome your suggestions regarding learning needs and your collaboration in providing programs. Please forward your comments and suggestions to the Faculty Development Office at FacDev@dal.ca.
